Building Slip Form

Building Slip Forms

Hampsey has completed various projects which have incorporated the slip form method of placing concrete.

Our design team partners have considerable experience in the specific techniques involved in the reinforcement detailing, concrete mix control, cast-in load connection plates, how a change of profile can be achieved etc.

With our partners’ capability, Hampsey is able to offer clients advice on the buildability of their structures and on the modifications that may have to be made to allow the slip form system to be utilised and being more effective.

On the construction side, Hampsey site teams are experienced in the many organisational and planning requirements that are necessary to make slip form a success. They have a wide experience of working on all types of sites throughout the UK...

The majority of Hampsey slip form projects are used for bulk storage silos; though high rise service cores have proved very popular in today’s market.

Advantages Of Slipform To Service Cores

Programme Benefits

Slip form offers unrivalled performance in speed in relation to floor cycles. If we look at “floor to soffit” height (residential 3m and commercial 5m), the installation and striking of a conventional service core to a building would take around a 1-week cycle. With slip form, a conservative rate of 2m-2.5m lift per day would deliver an 80% saving in time alone.

Labour Saving

The initial set-up of the slip form rig can be labour intensive, with the majority of the carpentry work required for the construction of the 3 working platforms.

However, once the rig has been erected, the carpentry work is minimal and a small crew is generally required to insert doorways, box outs and embedment’s. The onus is predominately put on to the steel fixers as the rebar fixing is the driving force. Significant labour savings are made from the shorter construction period required.

Crane Savings - Hook Time

A Slip form is a hydraulically-operated system with no reliance on hook time. Whilst in cycle, the slip form is self-sufficient. This alone offers the contractor the opportunity to carry out other operations whilst the slip form is in cycle. The crane can be used minimally if a concrete pump is utilised for placing of concrete. The only operation that will require the crane is the lifting of reinforcement which can be coordinated in a timely manner.

Safety - Working At Heights

Working at heights is always a high-risk activity. Regarding the risk of operatives falling, we believe slip form to be the safest method of vertical construction due to the rig being enclosed by monoflex, avoiding the following:

A. Operatives falling from the rig as they are working in a safe environment
B. Falling objects from the rig

Slip form gives Hampsey the benefit of utilising their resources more effectively as the labour can be allocated to other tasks in a much efficient manner than that allowed by other conventional forms of construction.

Slip form is today being used successfully and economically on structures from 10m in height to over 300m on the tallest building in Europe. There are many things to consider regarding the choice of application for vertical elements, slip form is considered more cost effective over 20m in height, but programme, environment, and clients’ requirements all have to be considered.
